World T'ai Chi and Qigong Day
The theory of acupressure states that the human body has meridians that carry energy throughout the body.  These meridians start at the fingertips, connect to the brain and then connect to the organs associated with the specific meridan.  For example the lung meridian is connected to the lungs via the nervous system.  If a lung problem should arise, an obstruction in the lung  meridian would slow down the flow of energy.  Once the obstruction is removed or disolved the energy flow becomes regular and the lungs regain their health.
To Visualize the technique think of a stone in a water pipe, the stone lowers the flow of the wataer through the pipe.  If the pipe is pinched right before where where the stone is located and the water is allowed to build up, the potential energy of the water that is stopped from flowing rises.  When water that has high potential energy is freed by releasing the blockage, water flows faster than normal pushing the obstruction away with it.  The obstruction is removed from the area and enables the water to resume its flow.  This is exactly how acupressure works.
